Ethical porn: the new sexual revolution

The sexual revolution from the 1960s to 1980s was meant to be the beginning of generations to come in which sexuality was liberated. It was a movement which challenged the traditional views surrounding sex and sexuality. No longer was conforming to the frigid, scared views of sex from the past considered normal. So, what happened?

People have started to have less sex. Single people would rather stay at home and watch porn than leave the house.

Far from freeing our expression of sexuality, mainstream porn shames us for it. Promoting a normative culture in which the sex is similar and lacks real depth. We live in a very polarised society. Either you are having and watching too much sex or not having and watching sex enough. There is no acceptance of diversity.

Mainstream porn treats its view of men, as well as women, in the industry as one size fits all. The issue is not that men dominate women in so much porn but that both bodies are treated as such. Bodies. The means to an end; The end being a chunk of money. For a generation who are not exploring their sexuality with other people out in the world as much as previous generations, the alternative provided is a narrow minded industry.

So what is Ethical porn?

Ethical porn does not necessarily mean soft core porn. It can be rough, hot and full of different niches. The point of ethical porn is that you know when you are watching it you are watching people who are actually enjoying and consenting to the porn they are performing. The problem with porn is less glamorous than we are led to believe. Think of unethical porn and images of men controlling weak woman while grunting like a Neanderthal pop into your head. The problem with unethical porn, like most industries, is the abuse of workers’ rights. These rights include, but are not limited to, fair pay, fair hours and not being asked twice if you want to do anal when you said no the first time.

I have mentioned how mainstream porn is a one size fits all approach. Contrary to societal views ethical porn can be more niche, more diverse, and more shocking than usual porn. The main premise of ethical porn is to celebrate sexual diversity while treating the people who work in the industry, well, like people. Ethical porn is often produced on a low budget and by independent companies. Its content is real, diverse and most importantly allows an exploration of sexuality.

Consumer choices can change the market. It’s happened with furniture, food and clothes. When we walk into a supermarket it’s easy to choose the free-range eggs because the industry listens to consumer choice. Do we value chickens more than human bodies? There has already been a massive increase in making mindful choices about buying sustainable products or food that’s been ethically cared for. The tide is changing, individuals are taking a greater responsibility for their consumer consequences than before. Ethical porn is the open door to a world where shame shrouds sexuality. Where a false sense of sexual liberation has dangerously kept us in the dark for too long. Ethical porn is the open door for a closeted society.
